Hungry for More? New hunger games book released March 18

By Katherine Abayev, Staff Writer

One of the most famous dystopian fiction series of all time, “The Hunger Games” still stays incredibly relevant and beloved by many around the world. The first book, “The Hunger Games” was written by Suzanne Collins in 2008. This book followed the story of a girl named Katniss Everdeen who was chosen to compete in her country’s “Hunger Games”, which is a competition where selected teenagers compete to the death while the whole country watches.

The novel discusses topics like wealth disparity, grief, and greed. The novel was instantly met with love and popularity because of its confrontational approach to the absurd world the book is set in and for its, at times, juxtaposition to the real world. Eventually, a movie was made in 2012 based on the first book. Afterwards, three more books were written and four more movies were released.

On March 18, Collins released the fifth book in the series, “Sunrise on the Reaping”. This book is the second prequel to the original novel and is said to take place twenty four years before the events of the first book.

The release of this book creates the hope of a new movie coming along and the series being continued further.

Emily Malakov, a junior nursing student shared her thoughts on the release of the fifth book.,

“I can’t wait until a movie is made from this book! I’m definitely going to compare it to the book and the other movies.”

Malakov shares a sentiment felt by many others, and wishes the movie to be made.

“I grew up alongside this series and have watched every movie and read every book. It’s crazy to see that it is still going and know that I have watched every movie at release and read every book. I think the original fan base is too old now and they don’t have interest in these types of movies. I personally think it’s fire and I can’t wait.” Malakov added.

However, some don’t share the same sentiment as Malakov.

Nodira Kazakova, a junior computer science student, said her thoughts on the release.

“I’m not excited, I’m neutral, I don’t really care,” she said “I loved the movies. I don’t think I have outgrown them, they’re very interesting and nostalgic and I rewatch them with my friends and my boyfriend every once in a while, they are awesome movies.”

While this may be an epic moment to some, and mundane to others, it is impressive that no matter the opinion, most have heard of this series and that it has gained such acclaim and support. Overall, this media is made to be consumed in the way one would see best, whether that is by watching all of the movies, reading the books cover to cover, or simply reading plot summaries on the internet, the hunger games has something for everyone in them. It is brilliant to see Suzanne Collins continue to write and share more about this tragically dystopian world.
