Shark Mentality: The mindset behind LIU Baseball

By Danielle O’Connor, Staff Writer

The LIU Sharks baseball team is making a name for itself in the world of college baseball. Representing Long Island University, the team competes in NCAA Division I and works hard to win games and better themselves each season. With talented players and dedicated coaches, the Sharks are a team to watch.

When it comes to the Sharks’ off-season routines, they stay busy to get prepared for the upcoming season. Senior pitcher and sports management major Jared Hughes set the bar high for himself during the offseason.

“For the offseason, I have been training and lifting 6 days a week trying to put on weight and just build up on the mound to throw harder”, Hughes states.

With his dedication and focus on strength and mechanics, Hughes is someone to look out for this season.

“I have always loved the pressure on the mound,” Hughes said.”It helps me lock in and focus. I feel I pitch better under pressure.”

Hughes isn’t the only shark who gave it their all during the offseason. Sophomore outfielder and criminal justice major Chandler Ketchup has put in the work, dedicating himself to his craft on the daily.

“I’ve been hitting a lot and I just am trying to become a tough out at the plate and I’ve been working on putting a lot of balls in play,” Ketchup stated.

Hughes doesn’t give in to any superstitions; he lets his pitching do the talking. While many players rely on rituals and lucky charms, Hughes believes that preparation and skill matter most.

“I don’t like to believe in superstitions when I’m pitching. I believe in routine and try to follow a good routine to prepare myself for the games,” Hughes said.

With a strong roster and a tightly bonded team, the Sharks are looking to make waves this season and won’t settle for less.

“It’s nothing but good vibes coming from the Sharks. We’re really excited for what’s to come. I think our grittiness makes our bond so special- you can see just how much everybody on the team wants to win”, Ketchup said.

The Sharks haven’t gotten off to a great start, holding a 4-9 overall record. However, they have a chance to turn things around in their first home stretch this weekend against conference rival Central Connecticut State, and they’re ready to bring the energy in front of their home crowd.

This matchup is an important one, as the Sharks look to start on a strong note on their home stage and in their first games of the season in the Northeast Conference (NEC). With their hard work in the offseason paying off, fans can expect clutch plays and plenty of waves on the field.
