As the calendar hits near October, the season changes to fall. Some people associate fall with the rusty orange color of the leaves and the changing of the weather. . However, sports fans correlate this time of year with the sport deemed “America’s pastime”; baseball. For baseball fans, October is a make-or-break month for their sanity, depending on which team they root for.
The New York Yankees are a staple part of the Big Apple. The “Bronx Bombers” have been around since 1903, making the franchise one of the oldest in the league. The Yankees also lead Major League Baseball (MLB) with a whopping 27 World Series championships. Although they lead the Majors in titles, it’s been nearly two decades since they got the job done.
Even though the Yankees are in first-place possession of the AL East standings, this season has been far from perfect. Injuries, bullpen mishaps and closers giving up runs are some of the many problems that were present in the Bronx this season. With that said Yankees fans have mixed feelings about how much they’ll produce in the postseason come this October.
Junior sports management/finance major Daniel Frankenberry and junior, marketing and business administration Jake Buck are among many New York natives here on campus that have strong opinions on the Yankees season and are eager to see if they can fuel their way to their 28th World Series championship.
“I would rate their performance so far a 7/10. It’s not that they have underperformed, it’s just the fact that they’ve underperformed my expectations going into this season,” Buck states.
Buck isn’t the only one who feels this way.
“I’m sitting here like I don’t trust this team to do anything in October. Their lineup has more holes than a piece of swiss cheese and I just don’t trust them. I think they went below my expectations even though statistically they are doing well,” Frankenberry said. During the MLB trade deadlines, star Marlins player Jazz Chisholm was traded to the Yankees. This sparked hope in Yankee fans.
“I was pleasantly surprised by the Chisholm trade. I wasn’t expecting him to have as big of an impact as he did given his struggles in Miami.” Buck states.
Chisholm’s trade to the Yankees helped change the direction of this team. However, many believe the change needs to be addressed within the management, lineup, and bullpen of this team as well.
“I think you need to fire Brian Cashman- the GM.” Frankenberry said. “More defense, more getting on base. We need more of a balanced offense. And, of course a significantly improved bullpen and at least two more quality starters in the rotation.
However, Frankenberry remains confident in his favorite team.
“Go out and do the absolute best you can in the playoffs. The world series is yours.”
The Yankees won in extra innings against the Mariners on September 18th, making them the first team in the AL to clinch a spot in the postseason. There is still a long road ahead with the playoff kicking off on Oct. 1, but this is the first step to greatness in New York. Will the Yankees bring it home this year? We’ll soon find out.
