The 2025 Masters Tournament was one for the books, adding another unforgettable chapter to the legendary history of the Augusta National golf course. From the first drive to the last putt, this year’s tournament was full of excitement and surprises, keeping golf fans on the edge of their seats.
As the battle for the legendary Green Jacket unfolded, pros and newcomers showed incredible skill and determination under pressure. While some of the more well-known golfers stayed in the hunt, other new or unexpected golfers came from what seemed like out of nowhere, proving that the game of golf can be very unpredictable.
Defining moments, key shots, and standout performances are what made this year’s Masters so memorable. Whether it was a comeback for the win or a heartbreaking near miss, the 2025 Masters tournament only added to Augusta National’s impressive reputation as the home of golf’s biggest event.
The first two rounds of the 2025 Masters set the stage for an exciting weekend, with memorable performances and disappointing exits. As the tournament started, early favorites like Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy stayed in the hunt, proving the importance that experience and skill have on Augusta’s challenging course. Justin Rose, in particular, showed impressive flashes and led the tournament after the first two rounds. While Rory McIlroy was left to keep his composure, making crucial birdies to stay not too far behind.

But not everyone could handle the Augusta National course. Former Masters champions Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson all missed this year’s cut and were done after only 36 holes and did not proceed onto the weekend rounds. On the other hand, newcomers like Matt McCarty, a Master’s “rookie,” took full advantage, turning heads by making the cut and finishing tied for 14th. His impressive rounds suggest he could be someone to watch in the future. As the second round wrapped up, it was clear that this year’s Masters would be filled with unexpected situations and impressive play.
As the weekend and the final two rounds of play came in Augusta, the 2025 Masters turned into a test of nerves and skill. Saturday had revealed a Rory McIlroy historic performance, starting with three birdies, two pars and an eagle, with players like Bryson DeChambeau remaining close. Other players, such as Justin Rose, the leader after the first two rounds, struggled.
In the final round, it came down to a 19th playoff hole between McIlroy and Rose, who were tied at -11. Replaying the 18th hole, it came down to the final birdie putt for Rory, and he sank it, winning the 2025 Master’s tournament and obtaining his first green jacket, completing what is known in golf as a “Grand Slam” in winning all four major championships in men’s professional golf.
“It is good to see Rory win it. I know the whole community of golf fans was rooting for him to get it done,” senior sports management major and golf fan Jack Peterson stated.
Junior finance major George Caroll added on.
“Every year the Masters comes around. I always forget how popular it is, and I can see why this year was very interesting,” he said.
The Masters is not only about who won or lost but the journey of each golfer and the incredible stories that are shown across the four days. From surprising rookies to pros chasing history, this year had everything. With Rory McIlroy finally winning his green jacket, golf fans everywhere witnessed a moment they won’t forget.
