Over the weekend, Beyonce’s new concert film “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” came out in theaters across the United States and internationally. This is her fourth concert documentary, coming four years after the release of “Homecoming,” which depicted her journey to her headline performance at Coachella. “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” is a concert film that encapsulates the making of her album and world tour sharing the same name, with a mixture of behind-the-scenes footage of her preparation and family, as well as real concert footage.
The film features her performing all the songs on the new album, as well as a couple of her most popular older songs like, “Crazy in Love” and “Run the World.” If you want to see an insight into Beyoncé’s life and a unique concert experience with lots of unapologetic energy and show-stopping performances, then many feel that this film is for you.
Senior finance major Marissa Lewis shared her appreciation for the film allowing fans who didn’t get the opportunity to go to the tour to still experience it.
“I love Beyonce, so I was looking forward to this for weeks. I went with a couple of my friends and we had the best time. I didn’t get to see her in concert this year, so to me this was the second best option and I’m so glad she releases these films for her fans that might not have had the chance to see her live,” Lewis shared.
Lewis recalled the unique viewing experience she had.
“We had such a fun theater, everyone was singing along and getting really excited. It was a fun Friday night, and just proved to me even more how amazing [Beyoncé] is at literally everything,” she shared.
“Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce,” premiered at the top of the box office, raking in almost $22 million for its U.S debut opening weekend, with sales projected to only get bigger. Among those at the premier was superstar Taylor Swift, who also released a concert documentary in October showcasing her Eras tour.
Sophomore education major Rachel Fisher recalls her experience seeing the film.
“I saw it with my girlfriend over the weekend. We were tearing up at so many scenes about her daughter Blue Ivy, and just the whole meaning behind Renaissance that Beyonce was explaining. Fans don’t really get to see inside of her world a lot or get to know her feelings, so this film felt so personal and connected with so many people I’m sure. I absolutely loved it and would see it again a million more times,” Fisher shared.
In addition to the performances, the film’s visuals are being praised. The transitions from one night of the tour to another, with different outfits and angles being captured of Beyonce, made it seem like you were really seated at the concert.
Beyoncé’s Renaissance film does its job at giving her fans an inside look into her world and feeling like they got to attend the concert if they missed out on it live. In the film, Beyoncé recalls her feelings of finally being free and that she has nothing to prove to anyone. Renaissance is that full circle moment for her: music celebrating love and energy. And now, people around the world can see it for themselves.
