From stadium to screen: Taylor Swift The Eras Tour

by Kendall Shamus, Staff Writer

Taylor Swift’s “The Era’s Tour” has taken the world by storm. Swift is an international pop sensation who originally rose to fame at the age of sixteen when she released her debut album titled “Taylor Swift.” Since then, she has gone on multiple world tours and released 10 albums since 2006.

“The Eras Tour” is her biggest tour yet. This concert is three and a half hours long and she goes through every album or “era” she has released as an artist. The tour is strictly at stadium venues to maximize the number of fans who can be in attendance. This was nearly impossible to get tickets for, due to the high demand of fans wanting to attend. Swift announced on Aug. 31. that she has filmed the tour and it will be released in movie theaters all across the United States on Oct. 13.

Swift’s fans–who refer to themselves as Swiftie’s–are thrilled to be able to watch “The Era’s Tour” in movie theaters, even those who had the opportunity to see it live as well.

Sophomore medical imaging major Mia Bekatoros, who attended one of the shows, shared her excitement for “The Eras Tour” movie.

“Despite going to a show I couldn’t wait to relive the experience in a new way. I think a lot of people who followed the tour closely expected her to release some form of media showcasing this tour due to extreme demand for tickets,” Bekatoros said.

When Swift announced she would be releasing “The Eras Tour” in movie theaters she wrote on her Instagram, “Eras attire, friendship bracelets and dancing encouraged!” Referencing how fans dressed up as Swift’s different eras for the in-person shows and passed around friendship bracelets with lyrics from Swift’s music.

By having the concert in movie theaters, it allows for a broader range of audiences to experience it. The many disappointed fans from November 2022 who were unable to get tickets to the live shows finally will get a chance to experience the event.

“I think the most exciting thing about the Eras Tour coming to theaters is the opportunity to share the experience with fans who were unable to get tickets to the concert. Not only for lack of tickets but health conditions, not making a stadium tour an option for some fans. Although I was able to attend the Eras Tour with my best friend, we can’t wait to see it in theaters again for a totally different perspective on one of our best memories,” Bekatoros said.

“The Eras Tour” has been helping the economy by boosting numbers of tourism in the cities the show has been to. Movie theaters have struggled post-COVID-19 pandemic with people reluctant to go back to seeing movies outside of the comfort of their own homes.

“The Eras Tour” movie is predicted to positively boost sales of tickets in movie theaters as well.

Junior musical theatre major Delaney Hill also agrees this will boost movie theater sales

“I think this will positively impact movie theaters across the country considering ticket sales. Due to COVID many theaters suffered profit losses and shut down. The Era’s tour itself has boosted the economy in general and now releasing the film will continue to benefit smaller theaters throughout the U.S.,” Hill said.

“The Eras Tour” has been a safe for women to create friendships at the concert. Swift has encouraged everyone to dress up in outfits inspired by her eras and trade friendship bracelets to help fans meet one another. She wanted to find a way for fans of all ages to connect and she did this by friendship bracelets. Trading these at the concerts has been a conversation starter for fans to get to know each other and connect by their mutual love for Swift and her music.

“With the Barbie movie, we saw an uproar of people, especially women coming together to celebrate each other. I think Taylor Swift is doing something really similar here,” Hill shared.

The entertainment industry has been seeing some struggles as there is a writer and actor’s strike with the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). The production of many TV shows and movies has been shut down because of this.

Hill expressed her opinion on Swift’s decision to announce the movie during the writers’ strike and the unconventional way she’s releasing the movie.

“This announcement is huge because of the writers’ strike. Taylor sold her film directly to AMC rather than an outside company which really sets a precedent for future films. She is an incredibly savvy businesswoman and I think a lot of times that is overlooked. The movie cost around $15-$20 million to make and she’s already made $26 million in presale tickets. Taylor has managed to captivate the masses in a way that’s never been seen before. She has the ability to be a ‘legacy ‘ act while still remaining relevant in today’s day and age,” Hill shared.
The tickets to The Eras Tour in theaters are now available and selling fast. It will be a limited engagement in theaters then rumored to move to a streaming service in the coming months. Tickets are available here: https://www.amctheatres.com/movies/taylor-swift-the-eras-tour-74500
