All classes were cancelled and offices closed on Feb. 9 due to the blizzard that dropped over 10 inches of snow across Long Island. Post was not the only Long Island school to cancel classes: Adelphi, Hofstra, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Old Westbury and public schools across Long Island were closed.
On the night of Feb. 8, Campus Life sent an email to students notifying them of what services would be open the next day. The student-run businesses were open in addition to Starbucks, Twisted Taco, Subway and the Winnick Student Center.
The office of Campus Life held an impromptu Bingo event at the Winnick Student Center and invited students to make snowmen and post them on Instagram with the hashtag #WeAreLIUPost during the blizzard.
Students enjoyed the unexpected midweek snow day. Shannon Rocks, a sophomore business major shared her experience with the snow day, “Some friends and I planned on going sledding up on south campus, but we settled on the great lawn instead.” She added, “I think it’s crazy that people still deny climate change when it was 60 degrees yesterday but now there’s a foot of snow outside.”
Charlotte Fetonti, a sophomore speech pathology major said, “It was really nice to get this break from classes and go sledding on the great lawn, and facilities did a great job plowing the sidewalks and roads.”
Meagan Kiser, freshman musical theatre major commented, “I had so much fun tubing in front of the mansion, it was so much better than being in class. I’m from South Carolina and that was the most snow I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Another out-of-state student, Katie Hicks, also a freshman musical theatre major, relished the day. “Since I’m from Texas I haven’t had a legitimate snow day since the sixth grade. I tried on multiple occasions to build a snowman today, but I couldn’t get far because my roommates decided to tackle me every time I was building it. She added, “It was a pretty great day.”
Christina Lynch, a freshman speech language pathology major mentioned, “My friends and I had
a huge snowball fight on Riggs lawn, it was very fun. Then we went back inside and made snow ice cream.”
