1) The online version of the campus radio station, myWCWP, was founded in 1999. It is run by students and is directed towards campus ages. The radio station, 88.1, is geared towards the core audience, aged 35 and older.
2) The campus Poetry Center, which is a part of the English department, has had some of the most famous poets in America, such as Steven Spender, William Stafford, and Jean Valentine come and read their poetry.
3) In 2003, the Hillwood Art Museum was renamed as the Steinberg Museum of Art at Hillwood, when Dr. Steinberg retired as President of LIU.
4) The museum began acquiring artwork in the early 1970s and over the last three decades, more than 650 new works have entered the collection through gifts and donations.
5) The Kahn Discovery Center was the original gym on campus before the Pratt Recreation Center was built. The Pratt Center opened on April 1, 2002. The total cost of the building was $18.5 million.
6) The Tilles Center, built in 1970, was originally called the Dome Auditorium. Due to heavy snowfall, the dome collapsed on Jan. 21, 1978; however, the collapse did not damage any of the offices within the building. The repaired building was first called the Bush-Brown Concert Theater, before being named the Tilles Center. If you walk indoors from Hillwood Commons to the lobby of Tilles, you will notice the walls are rounded. This is because of the dome construction of the original auditorium.
7) In 1934, the Doll House was built. It was made for Marjorie Merriweather’s daughter, Dina, and granddaughter, Marjorie, known to the family as “Marwee.” The girls named the Doll House “Deen Wee” after themselves.
8) The Doll House had a working fireplace and a kitchen with an oven and fridge. The second floor had a bedroom and half-bath. There are historic photos on the balcony of the mansion of the interior and exterior of the Doll House, as it was in the 1930s. The woodwork inside is made to a child’s size.
9) In the 1960s, the Doll House was used as an Alumni House. In the 1970’s, it became the Women’s Center, and in the 1990s it was where the campus EMT’s (emergency medical technicians) slept until they found space in the dorms for them.
10) In the front of Lorber Hall there is a tree called the Cucumber tree, due to its large leaves that resemble the shape of cucumbers.
