The Eras Tour – From stadiums to cinemas

Over the weekend of Oct. 13, the highly anticipated Eras Tour concert film hit theaters worldwide and the response was nothing short of amazing. After ending the United States leg of her Eras Tour, Taylor Swift announced to her almost 300 million Instagram followers that the Eras Tour concert film was going to receive a theatrical release. 

There were presale codes and early access to get tickets for the film on opening night, indicative of Swift’s impact on the entertainment industry at the moment. Tickets sold out within seconds of being released. The film was for every fan who did not attend the Eras Tour to experience the magic of it in the theaters instead. 

Senior veterinary technology major Amanda Antonucci, who watched the film’s opening night with her friends, details what the experience was like for her. 

“My friends and I went on Friday night and the theater was packed. It was mostly girls, and some were even dressed up and wearing merch from her concert. It wasn’t a quiet, movie night vibe, because everyone was taking videos, singing along and dancing the whole time.” 

Antonucci also saw the Eras Tour in concert and shared her thoughts on the two experiences. 

“I was lucky enough to see the concert, and it was amazing, so I was so excited to relive that night in the theater with my friends. The film was so good, and there were only a couple of songs that everyone sang too, so everyone in the theater really enjoyed just watching and listening to the music,” Antonucci shared. “It made me feel really nostalgic, even though the concert was only a couple of months ago.”

Many people have taken to social media to share their concerns with people singing and dancing in the theater. Sophomore musical theatre major Cassidy Scherz details how social media negatively impacted her perception of the experience. 

“I saw so many videos on TikTok showing girls screaming and singing, or having their flashlights on and waving their hands. I wanted to see it, but after that, I just knew I would have been so annoyed if that happened in my theater,” Sherz shared.

Sherz elaborated on the matter.

“I think for a lot of people, it was their way of getting to experience the concert if they weren’t able to attend it in person. I completely understand why some people were having this reaction in the first place, but I personally just wanted to see the film without all the added noise. I even saw some videos of girls forming circles at the bottom of the screen and employees having to turn the movie off because of the disturbance it was causing. Safe to say I’ll just wait until it’s on a streaming service or YouTube or something,” she said.

Swift has taken this year by storm with the debut of the U.S. leg of her Eras tour in which she plays her music from all her past albums in one night, hence the name. According to “Time Magazine,” The Eras Tour is estimated to make almost $5 billion from the U.S. leg of the shows alone. This includes all consumer spending like outfits, merchandise and travel expenses. The Eras tour film just adds to that stream of what seems to be endless amounts of money, with some news sources like CBS News saying Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is boosting the economy.

Antonucci shared that there were personalized Taylor Swift popcorn bins and cups on sale at the theater. 

“For like $20 you could have bought a popcorn tin with The Eras Tour logo and her face on it, and the same thing for a cup. It’s definitely a cute touch, and so many people bought them I’m sure they ran out within a couple of the first showings. They probably made so much money just by selling those, it’s crazy,” she shared.

Her impact is evident and her fan base has made it known they will support everything she does. The Eras Tour film is just another example of the massive effect Taylor Swift has on people’s lives and the economy.
