The Pre-Law Club is a newly established organization on campus as of the Fall 2023 semester. This organization is committed to providing students with guidance on the path to legal education and community engagement. This club ultimately strives to assist students interested in the field of law in securing internship positions and pursuing their interests in the legal field.
Sophomore international relations & diplomacy and political science major Suada Purisic serves as the President and a founding member of the Pre-Law Club. Purisic and the board of this organization work in tandem with Long Island University Pre-Law advisor Jeremy Buchman to address students’ questions, inquiries and concerns regarding applying to law school and the field of legal education.
“By becoming a part of this club, you immerse yourself in a community of like-minded students with a shared interest in law—a valuable opportunity, particularly considering the absence of a law major at LIU,” Purisic said.
The Pre-Law Club provides a pathway for connecting with like-minded students interested in entering the field of law as a possible profession. The goal is to facilitate meaningful opportunities for students to learn more about this profession by networking with professionals in government agencies, gain valuable perspectives from legal experts through experiential opportunities and prepare for the LSAT. When venturing into a new career journey, having guidance and support is vital, and the Pre-Law Club is committed to offering a supportive resource for those eager to learn and delve deeper.
“Pre-law students, and even students unsure about law, should join the club because there are several fun activities and informative events. We’ve had fundraising tabling events serving several delicious food options. We’ve also had a resume and internship workshop, and we’ve even had a gavel painting event. There’s so much variety in our events and overall, we want students to understand that law is everywhere. Learning a thing or two at our club can only benefit you,” sophomore political science and marketing major Amy Luis, who serves as the current secretary, said.
In addition to its scheduled events and meetings, the Pre-Law Club actively encourages dialogue and collaboration among its members, even if they are unsure of their interest in the legal career path. Through engaging discussions, workshops, mentorship and resources, students have the opportunity to explore the legal profession, which is not offered in curriculum at the university.
By fostering an inclusive and positive environment for members, this organization seeks to inspire friendship, accessible resources in this field and a potential lifelong passion for law among its members. As the Pre-Law Club continues to blossom, it continues to uphold its commitment to empowering students and shaping the future of students interested in law at Post.
The Pre-Law Club is currently planning networking events with pre-law clubs from across Long Island and New York City, featuring renowned institutions like Columbia University, NYU, Fordham University, Hofstra University, SUNY Old Westbury and UAlbany. They will also be hosting more events on campus such as a law bingo event and an outdoor movie night in collaboration with RISE.
The Pre-Law club has general meetings every Tuesday from 12:20 to 2pm. If you would like to learn more or stay up-to-date with this organization you can connect with them @liuprelaw on Instagram.
