Terrifying or technological breakthrough? Progression and fast improvements of Artificial Intelligence

by Alexa Garrett, Staff Writer

Imagine; your light automatically turns on as you regain consciousness in the morning. A self-starting coffee maker begins making your favorite latte as your toaster turns on with your fingerprint. You eventually start driving to work in your flying Sedan. All of this is a result of modern technology, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) leading the revolution. AI applications are growing and advancing by the day.

According to the PEW Research Center, “a quarter (27 percent) of Americans say they interact with artificial intelligence almost constantly or several times a day. Another 28 percent say they interact with AI about once a day or several times a week. On this self-reported measure, 44 percent of Americans estimate that they interact with AI less often.”

In no time, the less recognized issues of AI will be more prevalent. Everything that relates to technology comes with a cost, and students feel that the abuse of AI is frequently overlooked.

Junior computer science major Lewis Wright discusses how he believes AI applications are bound to overtake certain positions in the workforce.

“I don’t think people would like to admit it, but it is going to take some jobs that don’t require much manpower, that can be easily replaced with AI, but I think it will create many more jobs in different fields,” Wright said.

Utilization of this tool in fields such as computer science might lead to a more competitive work environment.

“I don’t think jobs in computer science are going to be lost because of AI, but I think the standard of work will be higher because people will be able to use it as a resource to improve their work,” Wright said.

Chat GPT, an AI system that provides quality research behind any topic, is frequently utilized by students and those in the workforce. Wright pointed out that AI is made up of superintelligence because “it improves itself over time, so whenever you correct it or it figures out that it’s wrong, it sort of helps itself.”

Due to the intelligence of AI applications, society must be careful not to rely too heavily on technology. E-sports team manager and junior Dylan Berk thinks that the loss of psychological creativity is one of the more pressing issues concerning AI. Berk wrote film scripts during high school, where he utilized his creativity to the fullest. When he discovered that AI applications were currently being used to write film scripts in Hollywood, he was taken by surprise.

“AI has been around for a long time, but right now it’s being a lot more commercialized, and definitely it’s learning a lot more, a lot quicker, and it’s getting to a point where most stuff presented by AI is a lot more accurate. I think that people should be aware of what it can do, there’s the fun side–it can create songs for people, it can create jokes–but then there’s also the more scary side which can create film scripts. Creativity is one of the biggest factors that is pushing forward modern media and the fact that big studios are trying to recreate that with computers is insane,” Berk said.

The debate on whether or not AI is more dangerous rather than safe will continue for many years to come. Berk also presents the point that regulation of machine learning will translate to what advancements AI uptakes.

“It can be scary at times, but if it’s regulated right, it shouldn’t be too much of a worry. I think it could be regulated by what is being fed to the programs,” Berk said.

Overall, students feel that Monitoring the usage of AI applications across the globe and balancing what is being displayed is important to ensuring a healthy balance between machine learning and humanity.
